Dresses, Heels and Briefs at War...

Okay, so you are probably wondering what the heck I am talking about~how can pieces of clothing be at war with each other? Well to be honest the title is a little misleading~there was no war and there was definitely no war between dresses, heels and briefs, although I imagine if there was, my money would be on the heels...anyway, what I am talking about is Angie's Showcase, which was held at the War Museum...

(Image via Boakview)
Angie's Showcase is an event put on annually, here in Ottawa, that showcases the various models and talent that are all part of the agency, Angie (owner of Angie's Models) flies scouts in from all over the globe in order to expose some of these youngsters to the world...kind of like a giant talent/fashion show audition...anyway it's a great event for a lot of the models to walk the runway for the first time and to be exposed to some of the industry...this year I was filling in for Julie of Popchampagne, who is living it up in Asia at the moment (lucky girl) and although it was fun, I must admit that I really missed my partner in crime (hear that Jules?)...Anyway I did manage to snap some pre-show shots and shots of the backstage happenings as well as the fashion shows, so here are some of the highlights...enjoy...

...and one last image from the talented Boakview...
So as I said before, it was a great evening filled with lots of beautiful people, wonderful fashion and a stunning backdrop (tanks, bunker replicas and aircraft always add a certain pizazz wouldn't you agree?)...however, it was also nice to be a part of an evening that not only displays Ottawa's talent but also enables a lucky few a foot in the door in this crazy world we call fashion...and you never know perhaps I was witness to a future supermodel/actress/celebrity in the making...that's it from me on this lovely sunny Monday...tomorrow I am off to Fredericton for a conference (CCA) but until then, happy new week everyone...

A different kind of Rice 'n' Beans...

Yesterday I realized that I haven't done a food blog in a really long time (there goes yet another one of my NY resolutions!) so I figured I should whip something up to get those taste-buds stimulated...and so being the lazy cook that I am, I opted for a traditional favourite: rice and beans...but this time with my own flair and twist added on...so here is a very simple recipe for a different kind of rice and beans...enjoy...

Ingredients
Vegetables washed and chopped
(You can use any veggies you like-I used the ones featured below)
1 cup Bean Medley (drained and washed)
1/3 cup chopped almonds
1 cup rice (I only had white but brown is the yummiest)
1/4 cup feta cheese crumbled (optional)
1 tbsp white vinegar
Salt and Pepper to taste
Any other kind of seasonings that you like (I used basil, thyme and a medley that my mother-in-law made which I can provide the recipe for later)

The veggies I used included:
1/2 tomato chopped
1/4 cucumber chopped
2 Greek-style hot peppers chopped
2 green onions chopped
1/4 green pepper chopped
1/2 avocado chopped

How to:
Cook your rice until fluffy
Mix all your veggies in a bowl with feta and beans and almonds

When rice is finished let it cool for a little bit and then add to your veggies and beans
Mix all ingredients together along with your vinegar and spices
Finally...Enjoy...
So there you have it....a lazy person's rice and beans with a healthy twist...this is great on a hot day for lunch and it can also be served warm or cold...TGIF everyone...

Katie Lockhart @ Home with The Selby...

...and The Selby does it again...this time it's designer Katie Lockhart and director Darryl Ward's Auckland, New Zealand home...and per usual it is both creative and gorgeous! I love the simplicity and the details and strangely enough I am especially drawn to the beautiful hardwood floors...no I am not going crazy (hmmm isn't the denial the first sign?) but rather I think I am more aware of floors since my husband, friend and I had to install new floors in our new place (boy oh boy and was that ever fun~insert heavy sarcasm here)...so I guess once you've had an intimate relationship with flooring, you become so much more aware of them...whatever, this house is stunning...enjoy...
So aside from my new obsession with floors (ugh..), I have now become completely obsessed with weather forecasts~I blame this on the fact that we have been having a particularly crappy spring, but then again given what's been happening on the rest of the continent, I should not complain...that being said, I hope you all have a great Thursday and at least some of you see some sunshine...

A Vogue Voyage...

Last week, in the midst of all the gross rainy weather, I was asked to do something fun, which really brightened up my days...Billings Bridge Mall asked me to style 6 of their mannequins based on characters from a wealthy jet-setting family as part of their Vogue Voyage Contest...Seeing as I will soon be departing on my very own voyage to Berlin, Bratislava and Vienna, I was really excited to rummage through stores, pull clothes and dress inanimate beings in travel-ready ensembles (see below)...I think of it as research...of sorts...anyway the contest itself sounds really fun: think Amazing Race meets Shopoholic (I know, right?) and the end prize is a trip to my favourite city in the world: PARIS! But I cannot give away any more details, so if you are in the city and feel like trying for a free trip to the city of lights, you can get all the contest rules and other details here...in the mean time, I am off to do some day dreaming about what to pack for my own travels...enjoy...

Jungle Fever...a.k.a. "Super Secret Pow Wow"...

...Bunny, Ursula, Carmen and Nadine...no these are not the names of playboy playmates nor are they adult film stars (or at least not to my knowledge) but the names of four cleverly illustrated characters by artist Britt Sanders, as part of her creative "Super Secret Pow Wow" collection...as stated on abacotgallery.com, Britt is a California native who graduated from Art Centre Collage of Design...She sites "animals, text messaging, hair, relationships and made-up conversations" as her main sources of inspiration...well, whatever her inspiration is, I say her illustrations are pretty darn awesome...both imaginative and fun, plus she has some great celebrity art as well, I featured two of my favourites bellow...to check out more of Britt's Pow Wow project click here...enjoy...
PS: apparently Britt is also really good at "drawing your girlfriend", so for all the boys out there racking your brains about what to get your lady for a birthday/ christmas/ valentine/ anniversary present, this may be the thing for you...just saying...
